Parking: Exit 16 has Texaco, TA and Love’s truck stops east of the Gallup weigh station. There is a Speedy’s Truck Stop at the border to Arizona west of the port of entry.
Information
There are no visible weigh in motion sensors in the roadway heading up to the Gallup scale and there is only one PrePass pole over the freeway. New Mexico has built a spot on the opposite side of the freeway to pull in west bound trucks for paperwork and portables. That area is directly across from the east bound weigh station’s ramp back onto I 40.
Alternate Route Information
There are two routes you can take.
We recommend that you plan to enter New Mexico at night on route 60. There is a Port of Entry in Springerville, Arizona, that should be closed at night. It is a west bound Port of Entry, but there are signs marking a weigh station for east bound trucks as well. Best to play it safe and cross when the port is closed. From I 40 you can take route 77 south out of Holbrook to Show Low. In Show Low, you’ll pick up route 60 east. 60 east will take you into New Mexico and to the town of Socorro. You’ll be able to catch I 25 in Socorro.
Another route is to take route 180 south/east out of Holbrook to route 61 east to St. John. Or you can take route 77 south out of Holbrook to Show Low, route 60 east out of Show Low to route 61, and route 61 east to St. John. In St. John, follow route 61 east (go through the S curves until route 61 curves left onto route 191 north). Shortly after the curve, you’ll see as sign for a 10 ton weight limit ahead. There is a weight limit on route 191 shortly before the junction with I 40. But you will turn east on route 61 well before the weight limited road. From St. John, you’ll go 29.2 miles to the junction with route 61 east. There is a rail road crossing that is flat- trucks with low undercarriage clearance should not have a problem. The junction with route 61 is near mile marker 417 and the Witchwell Tavern is on the far right corner. You’ll be on route 61 for 14.1 miles until you cross into New Mexico. At this point, route 61 turns into route 52. You’ll go through the town of Zuni Pueblo. You’ll be on route 52 for 18 miles before you come to Zuni Route 4. Zuni Route 4 is marked “Zuni Route 4 to Gallup.” If you miss the turn, it’s okay. You can continue on to route 602 north. Zuni Route 4 is a short cut. You’ll be on Zuni Route 4 for 5 miles until it dead ends at route 602. Turn left, heading north to Gallup. You’ll be on route 602 for 24.6 miles until you come to the first light in Gallup. This is route 564, turn right- there are signs “to I 40″ at the right turn. You’ll take this road around 3.3 miles until it dead ends at Business Route 40. There is a McDonald’s and a Subway on the corner. Turn right onto Business Route 40 and go 2 miles to the ramp for I 40 east. You’ll pass the Gilbert Ortega’s Trading Post which advertises truck parking.
