Alternate Route Information WB
This route has about 17 miles of hard-packed dirt/gravel road and goes through the Idaho National Guard training grounds.
Take exit 71 and turn left. Go past the Boise Stage Stop truck stop. You’ll be on S. Orchard Access Road. After you pass the truck stop, you’ll go about 7.5 miles before you hit the dirt road. There is also a rail road crossing that is slightly raised. This is an active railway. Shortly before the pavement ends, there will be a sign “Attention Shooters, Military Training in Progress.” Shortly after the pavement ends, there will be a sign that you are entering the Idaho National Guard grounds and that civilians must stay on main roads. You’ll be on dirt roads for just under 17 miles. DO NOT MAKE ANY TURNS. The speed limit for all vehicles over 2.5 tons is 25 miles per hour on through the National Guard grounds. There are several turn offs, but only one that looks like a Y in the road. This intersection is 7 miles after the pavement ends. Stay right at the Y intersection- the sign points to the right for Pleasant Valley Road and that is where you are headed. Not long before you get back to the paved roads, there is a small, raised bridge. It is only a few feet long and there is no weight limit marked- but the road is a dirt road and the crossing is wood. Once you get back to the pavement, you’ll have another rail road crossing in .8 miles. This is an active railway. You are on Pleasant Valley Road at this point and you will go 9.4 miles beyond the rail road crossing until the road dead ends at Gowan Field. This is Gowan Road. Turn left on Gowan. After .5 miles, Gowan curves to the right and turns into S. Orchard. You’ll go another 1.6 miles, through the light at W. Wright St./W. Victory Rd. to the left turn onto the on ramp for I 84. This puts you out at exit 52, Orchard Street.
Alternate Route Information EB
This route has about 17 miles of hard-packed dirt/gravel road and goes through the Idaho National Guard training grounds.
Take exit 52, Orchard St. Turn right and go straight through the light at W Wright St/W Victory Rd. You’ll be on Orchard Street for 1.4 miles until the road curves to the left and turns into Gowan Road. You’ll go another 1/2 mile and turn right onto S Pleasant Valley. This is not a well marked turn- it is right across from the Gowan Field main entrance and there is a small sign on the far side of the turn that says “Wild Horse Corrals.” Turn right onto S Pleasant Valley. S Pleasant Valley curves around and goes up and down several hills for 9.4 miles (go straight through the stop sign at Kuna Mora Road) until you come to the stop sign at a rail road track. This is an active railway and the crossing is slightly raised. Less than a mile past the rail road track is where the pavement ends. There is a raised bridge shortly after you get onto the dirt road- it is only a few feet long but it is a wood crossing. The dirt/gravel road winds around for 16.8 miles- there is a sign indicating that you are on National Guard grounds and that civilians need to stay on main roads. The speed limit for all vehicles over 2.5 tons is 25 miles per hour. You will not make any turns and you are headed toward S Orchard Access Road (the dirt road will eventually turn into S Orchard Access Road). After 16.8 miles, you’ll return to paved roads. You’ll cross over another rail road crossing 2.1 miles after you get back onto paved roads. This is an active railway- the crossing has a slight rise. The paved road is South Orchard Access Road- you have about 8 miles back to the freeway. It puts you out at exit 71 (the Boise Stage Stop is at this exit). Go east.
