Alternate Route Information
Going north on I 5, take exit 170, Magic Mountain. Don’t miss the exit, it’s the exit before the weigh station. (If you want to be sure not to miss the exit, you can exit I 5 at exit 168, McBean Parkway, and meet up with the directions at the junction of McBean and Magic Mountain). You’ll go east on Magic Mountain for 1.3 miles. There are some stretches of Magic Mountain that are not marked as no parking- but most of it is marked no parking. There is a Starbucks on Magic Mountain. When you get to the light at McBean Parkway, turn left. There is a double left turn lane for McBean and it is the light after the light at Town Center. Turn left onto McBean Parkway. You’ll be on McBean Parkway for .7 miles. Just after turning onto McBean, you’ll see a Target (with a pharmacy) and a US Post Office on the right. You could turn right onto Creekside- the first light- to access roadside parking for Target and the USPS. Otherwise, just continue straight on McBean for .7 miles. You’ll come to the light for Newhall Ranch Road. Turn left. This is a double left turn lane and it is the light after the light for Baywood Lane. You’ll be on Newhall Ranch Road for 3 miles- you’ll pass an industrial area with shipping and receiving docks and a Home Depot on your left and a Wal-Mart and WaMu bank on your right. After 3 miles, the right lane turns into an exit only for I 5 north. You will be north of the weigh station at this point. If you continue straight over the freeway, you can either get on I 5 south or stay straight for route 126 west.
If you like taking chances, you can run up the west side frontage road to the freeway. To do this, take the Magic Mountain Parkway exit and turn left, crossing the freeway. Turn right just past the interstate on The Old Road. The Old Road is the frontage road to I 5 and there will be signs on The Old Road that say NO TRUCKS OVER 7 TONS. You are not allowed to take this route in a tractor trailer. Take this past the light at Rye Canyon Road. You will pass by the north bound weigh station and you will be in plain view- there are no trees or bushes blocking the view. You will also pass a CHP outpost with public access of The Old Road. Continue past route 126 to the light at Hasley Canyon Road. Turn right, crossing the freeway and take the ramp for I 5 north. You can get onto route 126 off The Old Road but there is some construction in the area and the route is unclear.
To go north on I 5, out of Ventura you can take route 126 east to I 5 which puts you out north of the scale. Out of LA you can take 101 north to 23 north up to 126 east or you can take I 405 north to 118 west to 23 north to 126 east . Route 23 may be a non-truck route north of 118. Or you may choose to take route 14 north past Palmdale and Lancaster to route 138 west which will put you out on top of the Grapevine hill- this is quite a ways out of the way, but it will get you around the Castaic scale legally.
To go East toward Arizona leaving LA take I 405/I 5 north to highway 14 north toward Palmdale. There is a scale on 14 but it is an empty pullout area and I have never seen it open or heard of it being open. They would have to use portables. Take the Pearl blossom Highway exit just south of Palmdale. This takes you down a big hill with a few lights on it. At the bottom of the hill, it dead ends into route 138. Turn right and go about 10 or 15 miles to route 18. This will be a left hand turn across 138 where 138 turns to the south. Take 18 east and it puts you on I 15 in the Apple Valley area, north of the Cajon scales. You can take I 15 north to I 40 east to leave the state.
