Parking: There is a Travelers Travel Plaza with a large paved lot at exit 745 north of the Shasta weigh station. Exit 745 also has a McDonalds with truck parking and other restaurants within close proximity to the truck parking.
Alternate Route Information
This is a legal route but it is about 60 miles longer than staying on the freeway. There is a 14′ 6″ rail road overpass about 50 miles into the bypass with little room to turn around.
Take exit 736 for route 89. You won’t make any turns- the exit puts you onto route 89 headed toward Mt. Shasta and Lassen National Park. You’ll go 57.9 miles to the stop sign at route 299. Along the way there are many roadside pull outs but there is little or no shoulder along the route and much of the route is above the 4,000 foot level with some steep uphill and downhill grades. The only services that a trucker might be able to park at is about 27 miles in at the Bartle Lodge and Cafe. There is a vista point that is marked as “trucks not recommended” so don’t plan on parking in there (as opposed to a roadside pull out). When you get to route 299, you’ll know it from the rumble stips and the flashing red light at the stop sign. Turn right onto route 299. You’ll be on route 299 for 56.1 miles and it will take you back to I 5- when you get to Redding you’ll go through the light at Deschutes Road and keep going until you cross under I 5 and turn left for I 5 south. When you’re on route 299 you’ll pass multiple road side pull outs- and in the town of Burney (shortly after you turn on to route 299) there are many services and areas to park along the roadside. After 26.3 miles on route 299 you’ll pass an equipment repair shop for tractors and equipment. Route 299 also has some steep grades and runs above the 4,000 foot level. Route 299 puts you out at exit 680 on I 5. It’s a long route, but it is very beautiful and enjoyable in good weather.
